Research Centre for Injury Studies
Incorporating the AIHW National Injury Surveillance Unit

About the Research Centre for Injury Studies...

We are a Research Centre of Flinders University, located in Adelaide, South Australia.

The Research Centre's mission is to contribute to reducing the burden of human injury and adding to knowledge of its nature, causes, effects and control.

To do this, staff of the Centre undertake research, surveillance, analysis, consultation, and teaching, and disseminate information on injury control and related matters to public health and other practitioners, academics, government and the community. Where convenient, these activities are undertaken in collaboration with other individuals and organisations.

The Research Centre is an Academic Organisational Unit within the School of Medicine which, in turn, is part of the Flinders University Faculty of Health Sciences.

The Research Centre leads the Epidemiology of Injury and Safe Practice program of the Flinders Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

The largest program of the Research Centre is operating the AIHW National Injury Surveillance Unit which is a collaborating unit of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

About NISU...

The National Injury Surveillance Unit (NISU) is the collaborating unit of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) in the subject area of injury.

This is the AIHW's mission:

To improve the health and well-being of Australians, we inform community discussion and decision making through national leadership in developing and providing health and welfare statistics and information.

NISU's role is to fulfil the AIHW's mission in the subject area of injury. We do this by:

  • Analysing and reporting upon existing data.
  • Assessing needs and opportunities for new information sources and mechanisms, and for improvement of existing ones.
  • Developing new information sources and other relevant infrastructure
  • Providing advice and other services to assist others who are engaged in injury control and related matters.
The AIHW and the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing provide funds which enable NISU to undertake its work.
